Gant American Sportswear Begins with Humble Immigrant

Bernard Gant immigrated to New York in 1914 from the Ukraine. He set about his career straight away in the garment district, working as a collar mender in a factory located in downtown Manhattan. After getting married and raising two sons, Gant began a family business. They were known for constructing shirts for other brand names, such as Brooks Brothers, and putting their signature red G on a bottom corner of each before beginning a label in the mid-1960’s. The Gant American Sportswear brand sold well with college students all over the United States. The effect was two-fold: by selling their merchandise at only the most high-end store in town, the brand gained an air of exclusivity but by making classic American pieces in the preppy look, the brand was recognizable. It was a winning combination that made the brand a huge success. From there, Gant has offered consumers preppy sophistication in not only clothing, but also accessories such as glasses.

Despite it’s innate attraction to those who are already a fan of the brand, the look of Gant eyeglasses will easily fit into an accomplished wardrobe regardless of its style because of a minimalist approach to the sleek frames.
