When you’re on the short stack, the last thing you want to do is get your money in baddominated or pair over pair. When simply pushing alone doesn’t win the pot, you want the best odds for doubling up against your opponent. As a result, hand selection is extremely important in short stack poker player, and yet may not be as straight forward as in the hand selections you would make with a full stack.
One of the most common ways a short stack poker online player gets busted is pushing with a weak ace and getting called by a stronger ace (or a middle pair that is higher than the kicker). These are about the worst spots you can be inand commonly, many poker players will call a short stack’s all in with a mid to strong ace.
When in position, then, pushing with hands that are not likely to be dominatedsuch as medium suited connectorsoften gives a player a better chance to win when called by that ace or face cards, etc.
So in addition to pushing with the big pairs and big suited face cards that you would normally push with, when in position, using hands that are not likely to be dominated over hands that, when called, are most likely crushed, gives you a much better chance to stay alive.
