at the initiatives the PVC-u industry is taking to improve recycling.
With ever tougher legislation, growing customer demand and significant
cost advantages there are some compelling reasons why the PVC-u door and
window industry has increased the level of recycling in recent years.
Many of these companies have made significant progress, to the extent
that some of the most innovative new recycled products actually help
meet the updated Building Regulations- and our recycled cavity closer is
just one example of this. If this sounds too good to be true then
perhaps now is the time to take a closer look at the industry that
often, quite unjustly, has a reputation for not being the most
environmentally friendly.
There is general concensus that PVC-u is a superb material in terms of
its thermal performance, longevity and maintenance requirements, however
its perception in terms of a positive environmental choice tends to lag
somewhat behind. Over the last few years the industry has therefore
invested a large amount of resource into improving usage of recycled
PVC-u and the starting point was always going to be the waste material
generated during the manufacturing process. There is development work
going into the recycling of the frames when they are replaced on site
and this will be an area of continued focus over the next few years.
However, the advances already made in manufacturing waste means that in
addition to improving the environmental aspect, the industry has been
able to keep costs down at a time when raw materials are spiralling in
price.
